Painesville Electric is committed to providing safe, reliable power to all our customers. We also know coal is not the future in the energy industry. That's why we have worked through our partnership with AMP to provide a diverse sustainable portfolio of generation assets, including hydroelectric power, to control costs and make better decisions for our planet. Below are a few additional options customers can choose from:

EcoSmart Choice

EcoSmart Choice® is a 100% Renewable Energy Product, available to Painesville Electric customers through our partnership with American Municipal Power (AMP). By participating in the program, you will help stimulate the demand for new renewable energy facilities, thus reducing your carbon footprint and providing for cleaner, healthier and safer energy supply. An average customer participating in the program can offset 12,600 pounds of CO2 emissions each year - the equivalent of not driving your car 15,159 miles!

    • Pricing: Residential base price is 0.3 cents per kWh. An average customer that uses 750kWh / month would pay an additional $2.25 each month
    • Sign Up Options: Sign up online at www.ecosmartchoice.org or return the enrollment card to Painesville City Hall at 7 Richmond Street, Painesville, Ohio
    • Change Your Mind: Customers are able to join or leave the program at any time without penalty.

Green pricing programs such as this rely on the use of renewable energy certificates (RECs) to offset the customer’s electricity usage. Painesville Electric residential and commercial customers who choose to join EcoSmart Choice are able to offset varying levels of their monthly electric usage with renewable energy for an additional base cost of 0.3 cents per kWh ($0.003/kWh); the current EcoSmart Choice solicitation offers participation levels of 25%, 50%, 75% or 100%. For example, if a customer uses 750 kWh in a month and is participating at the 100% level, the EcoSmart Choice program will purchase and retire an equal number of RECs to match that monthly usage and the customer would pay an additional $2.25 ($0.003 X 750) as part of their utility bill that month to cover their chosen participation in the program.

Electric Vehicles

According to the U.S. Department of Energy Alternative Fuels Data Center, electric vehicles (EVs) charge their batteries by drawing electricity directly from the grid and other off-board electrical power sources. EVs provide instant torque, resulting in a fun, fast, and quiet driver experience. They cost less to operate and can have significant emissions benefits over conventional vehicles. If you are considering an EV, use AMP’s WattPlan tool to provide valuable information and help you make an informed decision on your next vehicle purchase. The tool provides a customized plan detailing your savings, available incentives, carbon reductions and more based on your driving habits, budget and electricity usage. Check it out at https://amppartners.wattplan.com/ev.

Painesville is also the proud home of a new EV charging station located in the Victoria Place parking lot at 66 S St. Clair Street. For a $2 entrance fee into the parking lot, electric vehicle users can park in the available spaces and charge for free at the Level 2 charger.
