Charter Oak Park was dedicated in 1900 by the granddaughter of General Edward Paine, founder of Painesville, celebrating the town's 100th birthday. Renovated and re-dedicated in 2003, Charter Oak Park is located at the point of Washington Street and Mentor Avenue across from Lake Erie College. The site has two significant features, the first being General Edward Paine's monument which houses the bones of the city's founder. The second, is the "Charter Oak," an oak tree transplanted from Connecticut (home of General Paine).
