Alarm Registration
Any Painesville City resident or business with an alarm system should register their security and/or fire alarm with the PPD in case of emergency. This alarm registration must be renewed annually by January 31. The completed Alarm Registration Form may be emailed to [email protected] or faxed to 440-352-2609.
Please note, there is no fee for this registration service, however, any residential or business alarms exceeding 3 false alarms per/year will begin to receive fines after the third false alarm ranging from $25 to $200. Any medical alarms are exempted from these fines. See the form for more information.
Crime Free Rental Housing Program
The Painesville Crime Free Rental Housing Program's goal is to increase the quality of life in and around rental properties here in the City of Painesville. The objective of the program is to educate rental property owners (or their designated local agent) on how to find suitable tenants and improve safety. The program works with rental owners on how to handle potential issues, what is expected of them as landlords within the City and educates in the prevention of common property maintenance violations.
This program is mandatory for any person or organization who plans to rent housing in the City and failure to register may result in misdemeanor charges. This code applies to property owners including governmental or public agencies acting as landlords. Exceptions include Lake Erie College residence halls, hotel/motel lodgings, owners of single family dwellings who lease to family members under a one year timeframe, owners who occupy the premises and rent to one occupant and share a common bathroom/kitchen, or nursing home facilities.
All properties must be registered with our Community Development Department and owners/landlords are required to complete a four-hour Crime Free Rental Housing Seminar to complete the registration process. Vacation House Watch
If you are a a resident of the City of Painesville who will be out of town for a period of four days to three weeks, you may request that PPD conduct periodic checks on your home while you are away. Vacant homes that are for sale, rent or under foreclosure are not eligible for this free program. Enlisting the police department to keep an eye out for suspicious activity while you are away does not guarantee against loss, theft, damage or mischief, but it can be a useful deterrent to anyone who may be considering accessing your home for criminal purposes.
To sign up for a House Watch, complete the Vacation Watch Form and turn in at the Painesville Police Department located at 28 Mentor Ave, in person. A photo ID is required. Forms are accepted Monday-Thursday, 8:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. and Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
National Night Out
National Night Out is a fun family night out in Painesville Square which happens annually on the first Tuesday in August. The goal of this event is to enhance the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community. Furthermore, it provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.
Education Programs
Painesville Police Department works closely with the local school districts and preschools to provide education presentations and demonstrations for students. PPD also provides two School Resource Officers (SRO): one at Harvey High School and one at Heritage Middle School.
