Chief Thomas C. Hummel Jr.
Painesville City Fire Chief
- Sworn in as a PCFD firefighter in April 1995, promoted to Lieutenant in March 2012, Executive Captain in August 2017 and Fire Chief in January 2019.
- Trained in Blue Card Command, Fire Officer I, NIMS through level ICS 400, the New Chief Fire Executive Program at the National Fire Academy and Command Leadership classes with FBI-LEEDA.
- Holds state certifications in Firefighter Level II, EMT-Paramedic, Fire Service Instructor, EMS Con-Ed Instructor and Fire Safety Inspector.
Captain Bob Mrosko
Executive Captain
- Sworn in as a firefighter in February 1995, promoted to Lieutenant in July 2003 and to Captain in December 2011.
- Trained in Blue Card Command, Fire Officer I and II, MFRI Command at the National Fire Academy and Command Leadership classes through FBI-LEEDA.
- Certified as a Swift-Water technician and holds state certifications in Firefighter Level II, Emergency Medical Technician, Fire Service Instructor, EMS Instructor and Fire Safety Inspector.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Physiology from Penn State University.
Captain John Niehus
Shift Captain
- Sworn in as a firefighter in August 1991 (making him the most senior member of PCFD), promoted to Lieutenant in October 2002, promoted to Captain in June 2010 and transferred to Executive Captain in August 2019.
- Trained in Blue Card Command, Fire Officer I and II, NIMS through level ICS 400 and Command Leadership classes with FBI-LEEDA.
- Holds state certifications in Firefighter Level II, EMT-Paramedic and EMS Instructor.
- Classes completed towards a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice at Kent State University.
Captain Mark Jonovich
Shift Captain
- Sworn in as a firefighter in February 2004, promoted to Lieutenant in December 2011, and to Captain in August 2017.
- Trained in Blue Card Command, Fire Officer I and II, NIMS through level ICS 300, MFRI Command at the National Fire Academy and Command Leadership classes through FBI-LEEDA.
- Holds state certifications in Firefighter Level II, EMT-Paramedic and Fire Safety Inspector.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Emergency Management and an Associate’s Degree in Fire Protection Technology from the University of Akron.
Captain Mike Grubach
Shift Captain

Sworn in as a part-time firefighter in June 2007, sworn in as a full-time firefighter in July 2008 and promoted to Lieutenant in August 2019.

Trained in Blue Card Command, Fire Officer I and II training and Command Leadership training through FBI-LEEDA. Currently working to complete required NIMS level classes.

State certified Firefighter Level II and EMT-Paramedic.

Lieutenant Earl Mahoney
Shift Lieutenant
- Sworn in as a firefighter in November 1998 and promoted to Lieutenant in August 2017. Serves on the Lake County H.I.T. Team and leads PCFD's Haz-Mat team
- Trained in Blue Card Command, NIMS through level ICS 300 and Command Leadership training through FBI-LEEDA.
- Certified Hazardous Materials Technician, certified Swift-Water Technician, state certified Firefighter Level II and EMT-Paramedic.
Lieutenant Chris Young
Shift Lieutenant
- Sworn in as a firefighter in December 2002 and promoted to Lieutenant January 2021.
- Trained in Blue Card Command, Fire Officer I, II and III, NIMS through ICS 300, FBI-LEEDA Supervisor Leadership Institute and FBI-LEEDA Command Leadership.
- Certified Firefighter II, EMT-Paramedic, Fire Safety Inspector, Fire Instructor and Live Fire Instructor.
- Associates degree in Fire Science from Lakeland Community College.
Lieutenant Paul Algier
Shift Lieutenant
- Sworn in as a firefighter in January 2009 and promoted to Lieutenant December 2022.
- Trained in Blue Card Command, Fire Officer I, NIMS through ICS 300, FBI-LEEDA Leadership Institute.
- Certified Firefighter II, EMT-Paramedic, Fire Safety Inspector, EMS Continuing Education Instructor.
