The following rules and regulations for cemetery grounds applies for both Evergreen Cemetery and Riverside Cemetery in Painesville, Ohio.
Flowers & Decorations
Fresh cut flowers are allowed any time of the year. No glass containers are permitted.
Summer decorations are permitted beginning one (1) week before Memorial Day and must be removed by October 1st. Summer decorations allowed include: potted, live flowers in standard clay or plastic pots or urns no larger than 15” or raised baskets of live flowers on a shepherds hook or other raised holder.
No more than one (1) pot or basket or shepherds hook per grave will be allowed. Single headstones marking two (2) graves or monument lots may have two (2) pots or baskets or shepherd’s hooks.
Pots must be placed at the side of the headstone.
No artificial decorations of any kind are permitted during summer months. This includes: silk or plastic flowers, statues, crosses, vigil lights, balloons, and wind chimes. Unfortunately, artificial decorations of these types often can cause damage to landscaping equipment.
American flags are permitted year-round.
Winter decorations may be placed on graves from November 15th to March 1st. Artificial decorations are allowed during winter months only.
Inappropriate items or decorations in violation or regulations will be removed by cemetery personnel. Live plants not maintained will be removed by cemetery personnel.
No in-ground plantings of flowers or shrubs will be allowed. Approved plants are permitted on monument lots only.
Cemetery personnel will not be responsible for watering.
No decorations are allowed on the columbarium niche face except government medallions. Fresh cut flowers may be placed at the base of the columbarium.
Veteran Flag Holders
- Flag holders are provided by Veteran Services and maintained by the deed owner
- The holder is to be placed directly behind the headstone or directly to the side of the headstone
- Flags are permitted year-round and will only be removed by cemetery personnel if torn, tattered or broken
- Local volunteer agencies like the American Legion and Boy Scouts, routinely place out flags (into flag holders) starting Memorial Day weekend
Headstones
- All headstones must be approved by cemetery personnel per authorized headstone requirements
- No in ground planting are allowed. Monument lots are allowed plantings but only when approved by cemetery personnel and will be planted by cemetery personnel
- Mulch (wood bark) may be placed around the headstone at a distance of 3 inches from the stone edge out.. No stone, gravel, pine nuggets, sand, etc is allowed in place of wood mulch. No edging material is allowed.
*Please note, the City of Painesville is not responsible for any broken or stolen items and reserves the right to remove any articles not keeping with the beautification standards of the cemetery or impeding the maintenance of the grounds.
*The City of Painesville's Cemeteries office has the right to review, revise , add or delete rules as necessary. Any item no addressed on the rules should be considered not permitted.
