Painesville Electric Plans for Peak Shaving 6/23-6/25

As a heat wave moves across the region in the next few days, Painesville Electric is working hard to keep costs down for their customers. The Painesville Electric Plant will be operational Monday, June 23 through Wednesday, June 25 to generate its own power to offset higher power costs supplied off the grid.

Often referred to as ‘peak shaving,’ during heat events power costs increase at times when demand is higher, often 200% to 400% more. By self-generating the needed additional power load (following EPA coal regulations), Painesville Electric lessens the impact of higher market costs and passes that savings to their customers. The Painesville Electric Plant, located at 325 Richmond Street, will be fully operating for three days to avoid peak pricing.

Customers are also being asked to voluntarily lower electricity use from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on these days. Painesville Electric customers can lower their electric use during peak hours by taking a few simple steps:

  • Raise your air conditioner thermostat a few degrees
  • Turn off lights and unplug electronics when they are not in use
  • Do laundry and other energy-intensive chores outside the hours of 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

“Since our City owns the electric system, it’s in everyone’s best interest to reduce power use during peak hours,” Electric Superintendent Joe Price said. “Conserving energy at those times helps keep electric rates lower for you and the whole community.”
