City of Painesville selects Major Waste for residential trash and recycling service

Painesville City Council voted 6-0 Monday night to approve a new agreement for residential trash, recycling and yard waste collection services with Major Waste Disposal.

The agreement will take effect July 1, 2026, following the expiration of the City’s current contract with Republic Services. The first day of collection with Major Waste will be Monday, June 29.

Council considered proposals from both Republic Services and Major Waste before making its decision. Both proposals included similar pricing structures and service levels for residents.

During the review process, City Council and the Administration also solicited feedback from residents regarding trash and recycling service priorities and experiences.

Under the agreement, Major Waste will provide weekly trash, recycling, bulk item and seasonal yard waste collection for residential customers. The contract also includes a senior discount program. Major Waste will be providing the same sized carts to residents and anticipates delivering the carts in mid-June.

Painesville will join an existing competitively bid contract between Major Waste and the City of Willoughby Hills, as permitted under Ohio law.

Residents who currently use automatic payment services with Republic Services are advised to cancel their automatic payments before the July 1 transition date. Additional information regarding service details, cart distribution and collection schedules will be shared with residents before the switch over to Major Waste.
