Passing of Thomas Borger, City of Painesville Fire Captain 1957-1982
It is with great sorrow that the Painesville City Fire Department announces the passing of Captain Thomas Borger, who served the City of Painesville from 1957 to 1982. He passed away on December 8, 2018. Below is his obituary:
C. Thomas "Tom" Borger
C. Thomas "Tom" Borger, 86, died peacefully Saturday morning, December 8, 2018, in New Smyrna Beach, FL, where he had been a resident since 1983.
Tom was born May 18, 1932, in Painesville, OH, the son of the late Chauncey and Kathleen (nee McGarth) Borger. He grew up in Madison and Painesville, and graduated from Thomas W. Harvey High School in 1950. Tom married Arlene Marcel at St Mary's Church in 1952, and they resided in Painesville where they raised their family, He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was called up for active service in 1951 during the Korean War. Tom served in the Navy for four years, and was honorably discharged in 1955. Shortly after, he joined the Painesville City Fire Department, where he served until 1982, retiring as Captain.
During that time, he was employed by the Marcel Tile Company, and later started a trenching business with fellow firefighter, Robert Wilson.
An avid sportsman, Tom loved bowling, golfing, fishing and hunting. He spent the two years immediately following his retirement sailing the Intracoastal Waterway on a three-masted wooden schooner.
In his later years, Tom enjoyed fishing in the Indian River, hunting in the Carolina's and target shooting.
Tom is survived by his wife of 66 years, Arlene; his daughters, Diane (Giuliano Zampi) and Joan (Gene Waddell); sons, Patrick and Scott (Meredith Rutledge); seven grandchildren, Eric, Olivia,Francesca, Alexander, Alessandro, Nicholas, and Michael; and three great-grandchildren, Xavier, Oscar and Freya.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, James; and his son, Michael.
A memorial service will be held in Painesville sometime in the spring of 2019.
