New Street Sweeper After 23 Years
After 23 years of service, the old Public Works Street Sweeper has been retired and replaced by the new 2024 Bucher CityCat.
This specialized piece of equipment features three brooms, a 250 gallon water tank and a stainless steel hopper. It has a turning radius of 9.5 feet with 4-wheel steering. Due to the extremely specialized nature of this piece of equipment, it's only operated by a limited number of fully-trained Public Works employees.
Street sweeping is an integral part to keeping Painesville streets clean. By removing litter and debris from the roadways it promotes a safer environment for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists. The risk of accidents and injuries is reduced along with decreasing bacterial buildup and preserving the pavement integrity. Because it removes dirt from the sides of roadways, weeds are less likely to sprout through the cracks and dirt, making the city more attractive.
Environmentally, street sweeping can help keep our storm water clean by removing pollutants before they enter storm drains and waterways. Air quality is also a factor as sweepers can pick up microscopic pollutants that are kicked up into the air by cars on the road.
