Norfolk Southern Railroad Crossing Closures

UPDATE 5/23/2023 at 5:45 p.m. -  Per the railroad, the RT20 Mentor Ave crossing is behind schedule and will remain closed through Thursday, May 25. The Liberty Street and Chestnut Street crossings are on schedule to be completed on Wednesday, May 24 and will reopen once crews have cleared the crossing.

UPDATE 5/19/2023 at 1:45 p.m.– The W Jackson Street sinkhole has been evaluated and crews have temporarily filled the hole with gravel. W Jackson Street is currently reopened and will serve as a detour for the railroad crossing closures the week of May 22. A permeant pavement fix will occur after traffic flow returns to normal in the coming weeks.

ROAD NOTICE 5/18/2023 - The City has been informed by Norfolk Southern that starting Monday, May 22 through Wednesday, May 24, the railroad crossings at Mentor Avenue, Chestnut Street and Liberty Street will be completely closed for the replacement of rails. This will significantly impact traffic flow in the city and motorists are encouraged to allow extra time for travel.

The current sinkhole closure at W Jackson Street and Newell Street continues. A contractor is scheduled to evaluate the damage around a manhole on Friday, May 19. Until this evaluation occurs, there is no timeframe for this closure. If possible, crews will repair the damage over the weekend before the May 22 railroad closures. However, safety is priority and if it is not possible to make a timely repair based on the inspection, W Jackson Street will remain closed the week of May 22.

The detours for the above closures will be S State Street to SR 84 and Richmond Street to SR 2 to SR 44. Please be patient with fellow motorists as everyone tries to navigate these closures. City Administration and the Engineering Department have been in contact with all parties involved to try to alleviate the traffic situation. At this time, there is no change in plans. Please allow extra time for travel over the three day timespan.
