Position Objectives:

This is unskilled and semi-skilled work in helping electric distribution workers and/or tree trimmers engaged in electric line work and tree trimming in the municipal electric distribution system.

Work involves responsibility for performing semi-skilled and skilled laboring tasks in support of tree trimming crews.  Assignments are varied in order to provide experience and practical training leading to the development of tree trimming skills.  An employee of this class receives instructions and close supervision in the performance of individual tasks and in the observance of adequate safety precautions.  Tasks are normally performed on the ground, but some aerial work may be required.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Drives a tree trimming truck to and from jobs; operates chain saws, chipper, stump remover, and other tools; repairs and cleans tools.  (TC)
  • Drives a line truck or bucket truck to and from jobs; operates line truck, assists line workers in building and maintaining power lines and the electric system. (LC)
  • Maintains and cleans tools and trucks. (B)
  • Directs traffic around job site, keeps the public a safe distance from job site. (B)
  • Cuts and chips limbs cut from trees; climbs trees.  Trims lower branches. (TC)
  • Assists in performing other types of ground work, such as cleanup of work area. (B)
  • Performs related work as required. (B)

Minimum Requirements:

Education:          High school diploma 

Experience:        Some experience in general labor.

A different combination of education and experience may be acceptable if deemed equivalent.

License or Certification Required:  Must obtain and maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License within one (1) year of appointment.

Physical Demands:  Some heavy lifting required, some climbing, working outdoors.

Scheduling Demands and Constraints:  Must be willing and able to work overtime on weekdays and weekends and in all types of weather.

Desirable Training and Experience:

Knowledge of: 

  • The hazards and necessary safety precautions related to tree trimming especially as it relates to trimming around electric lines.
  • The hazards and necessary safety precautions related to electrical line work.
  • Properly cut trees and limbs, on the ground and in the air.
  • Various knots and roping techniques commonly used in the tree trimming industry.
  • Experience with bucket trucks.

Skill and Ability to:

  • Follow oral instructions.
  • Meet such physical requirements as may be established by competent authority to complete work duties.
  • Learn tree trimming.
  • Learn line work, line materials and their proper use.
  • Pass a pole climbing course within the first year. (LC)
  • Climb with a rope and saddle. (TC)
