Position Objectives:

This is skilled work at an advanced level in the use of acetylene or electric arc welding equipment at the electric generation plant.

Work requires the application of trade skills to a variety of welding, brazing, and metal cutting jobs on ferrous and nonferrous metals.  The quality of welding must be such as to pass rigid tests for certification.  The employee exercises independent judgment as to welding methods used.  Assignments are also received in a variety of other maintenance duties and related shop work.  All work is subject to review by a superior for compliance with standing procedures and specifications.

Duties and Responsibilities:

DUTIES (The duties listed below are illustrative of the work performed by this classification.  All duties are essential functions of the job unless otherwise noted with an asterisk.)

  • Preheats and cleans metals; lays out, cuts, and fits materials for welding; selects proper welding heat and proper type and size of electrodes for correct penetration and strength of welded materials.
  • Welds and repairs high pressure boilers, coal pipes, water lines, platforms, coal elevators, and other plant equipment and structures.
  • Fabricates special apparatus for general operational purposes.
  • Performs a variety of maintenance and repair tasks on structures, equipment, and machinery.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Requirements:

License or Certification Required:  Certification as a high pressure welder (6G).

Physical Demands:  Lift 50 lbs. frequently and 100 lbs. occasionally; ability to carry 50 lbs. frequently; ability to climb stairs frequently and walk up to 8 hours a shift; ability to stoop, bend, twist, squat, and kneel frequently; ability to work in a dusty environment, in cold and hot weather, and in high humidity; ability to hear and speak clearly in a loud environment and over a radio; ability to work in areas of possible high noise B 87 decibel time weighted average; ability to wear a respirator.

Scheduling Demands and Constraints:  Available to work overtime as necessary.

Desirable Training and Experience:

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (Required to qualify for position)

Education:          Graduation from high school supplemented by courses in welding.

Experience:         Considerable experience as a welder as well as standard construction work.

A different combination of education and experience may be acceptable if deemed equivalent.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (Required for satisfactory performance)

Knowledge of

  • The methods, materials, tools, and practices of the welding trade and of general maintenance and repair work to include carpentry, plumbing and masonry work.
  • The properties of ferrous and nonferrous metals encountered in welding work.
  • The occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.

Skill and Ability to:

  • Make welds on boilers and high-pressure vessels which can pass tests for certification.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions and to work from sketches, diagrams, blueprints, and broken parts.
  • Skill in the use and care of the tools and equipment common to the welding trade and maintenance and repair.
