Position Objectives:

This is manual and semi-skilled work assisting a tree trimmer clear rights-of-way for high-voltage power lines by operating a bucket truck, stump grinder, and other equipment.

Work involves performance of tasks such as removing dead trees, limbs, and branches which are interfering with power lines.  Care is exercised to prevent damage to power lines and private property.  Work is performed under the supervision of a tree trimmer.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Cuts and removes trees, branches, and other types of vegetation along right-of-way of power line routes and city parkways.
  • Clears and removes rubbish, such as tree limbs and stumps, from power line routes and parkways.
  • Operates and maintains automotive and other equipment used in tree trimming tasks.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Requirements:

Education:      High school diploma 

Experience:     Some experience in tree trimming work.

A different combination of education and experience may be acceptable if deemed equivalent.

License or Certification Required:  Valid commercial driver's license required.

Desirable Training and Experience:

Knowledge of: 

  • The methods, procedures, tools, and equipment used in tree trimming.
  • The hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary in tree trimming along power lines.

Skill and Ability to:

  • Prune and shape trees without damaging and ruining their symmetry and appearance.
  • Work outdoors under varying weather conditions.
  • Meet such physical requirements as may be established by competent authority.
  • Identify and distinguish high-voltage lines from other power lines.
  • Use tools and equipment used in tree trimming.
  • Fill in for the tree trimmer and run the crew in their absence when necessary.
