Position Objectives:
General Purpose for Job: This is skilled advanced electrical work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of distribution lines and related components of the municipal electrical distribution system.
Work requires the application of electrical skills and knowledge to a variety of work on overhead and underground distribution lines. Incumbents must be alert to the hazards in handling power lines under varying weather conditions and must take prescribed precautions to protect life and property. Work is normally performed as a member of a line crew under the direction of a superior. However, an employee may also work with considerable independence in answering service calls and diagnosing power problems. A superior inspects work in progress and evaluates performance through the efficiency of power distribution operations.
Duties and Responsibilities:
DUTIES(The duties listed below are illustrative of the work performed by this classification. All duties are essential functions of the job unless otherwise noted with an asterisk.)
- Climbs poles or uses bucket truck to work on energized high and low voltage power lines and equipment; installs, maintains, repairs, or replaces distribution lines, transformers, switchgear, lightning arresters, ground rods, cross arms, and insulators.
- Installs underground wiring and transformers; digs holes to set new poles for extension of the distribution system or to replace old poles; transfers conductors, transformers, or other equipment.
- Installs consumer service lines from poles or underground facilities to buildings and houses; makes voltage checks on lines and transformers.
- Installs and repairs street lights and traffic signals.
- Assists in training lower-level electric distribution workers; supervises a crew in the absence of a superior; serves on standby duty.
- Performs related work as required.
Minimum Requirements:
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (Required to qualify for position)
Education: Graduation from high school supplemented by training courses covering electricity, meters, oil circuit breakers, transformers, and related equipment.
Experience: Experience in overhead and underground electrical distribution work at the Electric Distribution Worker I level.
A different combination of education and experience may be acceptable if deemed equivalent.
License or Certification Required: Valid commercial driver's license required.
Physical Demands: Work outdoors under varying weather conditions. Meet such physical requirements as may be established by competent authority.
Scheduling Demands and Constraints: Availability for overtime shifts.
Desirable Training and Experience:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (Required for satisfactory performance. Those which may be acquired after hire are noted with an asterisk.)
Knowledge of:
- The municipal electrical distribution system.
- The standard methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of high and low voltage electric transmission and distribution lines.
- Occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.
Skill and Ability to:
- Locate, diagnose, and repair defects in the electrical distribution system, independent of supervision.
- Work at heights.
- Understand and execute oral and written instructions and to interpret electrical diagrams and plans.
- Supervise the work of subordinates.
- Meet such physical requirements as may be established by competent authority.
- Skill in the use and care of the tools, equipment, and materials used in the work.
