The Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) reviews requests from property owners seeking exceptions to the City’s zoning regulations.
These requests, known as variances, may include:
- Yard setbacks
- Lot size requirements
- Fences, sheds, and accessory structures
- Signage
- Off-street parking
The BZA also hears appeals related to decisions made by City Administration and serves as the City’s Building Code Board of Appeals.
Responsibilities
The Board of Zoning Appeals is responsible for:
- Reviewing and deciding variance requests
- Interpreting the City’s Zoning Map and Unified Development Code
- Hearing appeals of administrative decisions related to zoning and building requirements
Membership
The BZA is made up of five City residents appointed by City Council.
- Members serve five-year terms
- Vacancies are filled for the remainder of an unexpired term
- Positions are unpaid
- Members must be qualified electors of the City
Meeting Information
Meetings are held the third Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. in Courtroom #1, 7 Richmond Street, Painesville. All meetings are open to the public.
